Coming back to university after the Christmas break can feel a little nerve-wracking. After weeks of rest, festive food, and late mornings, getting back into a routine can seem overwhelming. Whether you’re returning to lectures, preparing for exams, or starting university for the first time in January, planning ahead can make the transition much smoother.

Here are some practical and realistic tips to help you settle back into university life with confidence.

1. Try new things

While it can be tempting to slip straight back into old habits, returning to uni after the break is a great opportunity to develop new routines.

We’ve all heard it: “New year, new you, new hobby.” It’s the speech we give ourselves every January 1st and often forget by February. That’s completely okay. But trying something new, even something small, can give your days a sense of purpose and make getting up and getting ready feel worthwhile.

If you’re still finding your people, you’re not alone. Many students feel the same way, especially after time away. Joining a club or society is a great way to meet people who share your interests.

2. Ease back into studies

You don’t need to dive straight into intense revision. Start gently by reviewing your notes from last term to jog your memory and get back into the academic mindset. This can help you feel more prepared for upcoming classes and reduce that “I’ve forgotten everything” panic.

Try re-engaging with your subject in small ways. Look over your reading list, watch a short video related to your course, or organise your deadlines. And yes, your lecturer didn’t put those readings there just to torture you (even if it sometimes feels like it!).

3. Take things one day at a time

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you think about everything at once: lectures, deadlines, exams, social life, and future plans. Instead, focus on what you need to do today.

Setting small, achievable goals can make a big difference. Even ticking off one task can give you a sense of accomplishment and help build momentum. Remember, progress doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be steady.

4. Eat well

After the holidays, it can be tempting to skip meals or live off convenience food, especially when you’re busy. But eating regular, balanced meals can really help with energy levels, concentration, and mood.

This doesn’t mean cooking elaborate meals every night. Simple, nourishing food is more than enough. Don’t forget to drink water, get some fresh air, and try to prioritise sleep, your body and mind will thank you.

5. Bring a bit of home back with you

Returning back to university can sometimes feel like being uprooted all over again. Bringing something familiar from home. Whether it’s photos, your favourite mug, a blanket, or snacks you love can make your space feel more comforting and familiar.

Having small reminders of home can help ease homesickness and make your room feel like your space again.

Getting back into university life after Christmas isn’t always easy, and that’s okay. Give yourself time, be kind to yourself, and remember that everyone adjusts at their own pace. With a bit of planning and self-care, you’ll soon find your rhythm again.

You’ve got this!
