Your Guide to Settling Into Student Life

Moving into your student house is exciting, but there’s a lot to remember when you’re getting settled. From packing the essentials to finding your nearest supermarket, a little preparation can make your first few weeks at home much easier.

Here’s our simple settling-in guide to help you get started.

Before you set off

If you yet to check-in here are a few tips to get you ready! Before you even leave to start you new chapter, make sure you have the correct check-in date, time and property address. It sounds obvious, but it’s one less thing to worry about.

Pack the essentials

You don’t need to bring your whole life with you! Start with the things you’ll definitely need on day one:

  • Phone and charger
  • ID and bank card
  • Bedding
  • Toiletries
  • A few clothes
  • Anything you need for your first night

You can always pick up anything you have forgotten once you are settled in.

When you arrive

Take a few photos before you completely unpack. It is useful to have record of how everything looked when you moved in.

Top tip: Get your bed ready first! After a busy day of travelling, unpacking and settling in, you will be glad you made your bed first.

Spot the stickers

Keep an eye out for our useful information stickers around your property. They’ll help you find information about things like heating, boilers and bins, so you know what to do if you need them.

Get to know your new area!

Once the essentials are sorted, take some time to explore your surroundings. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, bus stop and train station, and have a look at some of the local spots you might want to visit.

If you are heading to university or work, it is also worth doing a test run of your journey. It’ll make the first morning a lot less stressful.

Save the important numbers

Save any numbers you might need during your time in your new home, including:

  • NHS 111 – for non-emergency medical advice.
  • 999 – for life-threatening emergencies or immediate danger.
  • Your university support team – save their contact details and make sure you know where to go if you need support.
  • Maintenance – report issues through the Main Manager Helpdesk app. You can also contact the Helpdesk directly on 0330 828 8062 and choose option 2.

And finally… enjoy it!

Moving into your student house is the start of a new chapter. Once the boxes are unpacked and the essentials are sorted, take some time to settle in, meet your housemates and get to know your new area.

Welcome to your new home! 🏠
