Thinking About Life After Uni? Your Guide to the UK Post-Study Visa
The final year of university is a whirlwind. Between dissertation deadlines and exam prep, it’s easy to let “what comes next” slide to the back of your mind. If you are loving life in the UK and want to kickstart your career here, now is the time to get clued up on the Graduate Route (commonly known as the Post-Study Work or PSW visa).
We have extensively researched the 2026 and 2027 Home Office updates to help you plan ahead. While the books aren’t closed on your degree just yet, knowing your options now will make your transition from student to professional a whole lot smoother.
What is the Graduate Route?
The Graduate Route, also known as the Post-Study Visa, is a visa that allows international students to stay in the UK to work, or look for work, at any skill level after they finish their studies. You don’t need a job offer to apply, which gives you the ultimate freedom to find the right fit.
How long can you stay?
It depends on when you apply and what you studied:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s: If you apply on or before 31 December 2026, you get 2 years.
- The 2027 Change: If your results come in later and you apply on or after 1 January 2027, the stay period for Bachelor’s and Master’s grads is reduced to 18 months.
- PhD Graduates: You’ve earned 3 years (this remains the same even after January 2027).
Eligibility
You cannot apply just yet. You have to wait until your university officially confirms you’ve passed. However, you must meet these criteria:
- You must be in the UK on a valid Student visa
- You must apply before that Student visa expires.
- Your university must have informed the Home Office that you’ve successfully completed your course (this usually happens shortly after results day)
What’s it going to cost?
Budgeting for your visa is a key part of “adulting” post-graduation. Here is what it looks like as of 2026:
- Application Fee: £880
- Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035 per year.
For a 2-year visa (applying in 2026), you are looking at a total of £2,950. For an 18-month visa (applying in 2027), the IHS is pro-rated, bringing the total to approximately £2,432.
The “Stay Put” Rule
One mistake students often make is traveling home for a break right after exams. Do not leave the UK while your Graduate visa application is processing.
If you leave the country before a decision is made, your application is automatically withdrawn. This can cause a major headache for your return.
